Foreign Minister Valdrack Jaentschke explains why Nicaragua did not sign the CELAC declaration The position of Comandante Daniel and Compañera Rosario is, first we have to touch on today's issues; secondly, we have to do so based on how we have already advanced, and by touching on them we have to present a position to the world. Palestine, for example.
We are not going to accept taking a backward step, we are not going to accept omitting condemnation of the blockade of Cuba, we are not going to accept omitting condemnation of Unilateral Measures against Venezuela, we are not going to accept the omission of Reparations for the Caribbean Countries, for the transatlantic slave trade, which is an important issue for them.
I cannot allow the most backward forces of the Region to come and impose their will… Argentina and Paraguay began to dismantle, to diminish, to dismember that Declaration which contained the Fundamental Principles with which we agree…
We are not going to let them fail to express Solidarity with Palestine; we are not going to let them fail to express Solidarity with the Fraternal People of Haiti; we are not going to let them omit any mention of Puerto Rico.
Latin America: the cutting edge of the struggle against Trump On Cuba, Trump’s attack lines are clear. He has already redesignated Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism…he has lifted the suspension of Title III of the 1996 Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act, which grants US nationals with claims to property nationalised in Cuba after the revolution the right to sue in US courts individuals or entities dealing with that property.
Turning to Nicaragua, when the US supported coup failed in 2018, Trump imposed sanctions and declared a national emergency. Biden added more sanctions in 2021 and 2022, to block for example both Nicaragua’s gold trade with the US and investment loans to the country. The sanctions stopped most loans from the IMF, World Bank and the International Development Bank. The new sanctions seek to restrict loans for economic development from the Central America Bank for Economic Integration which funds roads, water and energy projects, and housing in the country.
Solidarity with Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua in defence of their sovereignty remains a critical necessity, in this country and worldwide.
Government of Nicaragua: Nicaragua continues defending the Palestinian People in the International Court of Justice Nicaragua will be submitting its Report to the International Court of Justice as scheduled this year by way of follow-up to the normal course of the trial.
With regard to the case initiated by the Republic of South Africa against the State of Israel for the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, Nicaragua will also continue its collaboration and participation in the trial in defense of the rights of the Palestinian People.
