John Perry: The quiet plot to end progressive government in Honduras Honduras is Nicaragua’s strongest ally in Central America. The Xiomara Castro administration in Honduras is the only one that shares Nicaragua’s commitment to combating poverty, imperialism, and neoliberalism. The US government would love to get rid of that fragile democracy, and with elections at the end of this month, this is particularly vulnerable time for Honduras. If the US succeeds in engineering a change of direction there, it could lead to a consensus to expel Nicaragua from the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). And a right-wing Honduran government would most likely support Washington’s military aggression in the region, bringing the threat right to Nicaragua’s border. This is why it is very important to follow developments in Honduras.
Daniel Ortega Speech on the 46th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Ministry of the Interior and the 49th Anniversary of the Death of Carlos Fonseca “Carlos [Fonseca], Tomás [Borge], both from Matagalpa, the two of them …are really founders of the Sandinista Front. Practically on the eve of the Triumph our Brother Carlos fell in combat there in the mountains….Carlos was heading towards the central encampment which had already been decimated by the genocidal Somoza Guard. Why? Because there had been a division in the Front, there was division, some Comrades simply did not recognize Carlos' leadership… compañeros and compañeras were engaging in the discussion, in the dialogue, in the meetings. What for? So that the Front would be unified and not continue fighting the battle, divided.
And that is a fundamental principle, Unity makes peoples powerful, it makes young people powerful, it makes Families powerful, and division simply destroys. And today, Nicaraguan Brothers and Sisters, Nicaraguan families, we are seeing the results of the Cohesion, of the Unity of the People…and we have to take care of that Cohesion, we have to strengthen it, because the enemy remains the same…That enemy, in fact, is always out there looking for ways to dominate and subordinate the Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Peoples of the World. But we are living through a stage in which that enemy, no matter how much Military Power it has, no matter how much Economic Power it has, has been weakened, has been discredited, is getting worn out.
…other Forces have been growing, and among these forces, the People's Republic of China stands out… There too is Russia, a Russia that has managed to develop, sustain itself, fight for its sovereignty, as it has been doing…And to this one can add developing countries as well as other developed Countries, which are already forming a front of struggle clearly stating that Another World is Possible, and not only stating it, but building a New World, one that is being formed by Countries seeking Peace, seeking the Well-being of Peoples. [China] continues to develop its economy and trade in the world. Today it is the world’s leading commercial power, present on every Continent, in Asia, in Africa, in Latin America.
[A Chinese medical ship] is coming full of Doctors to provide care for Nicaragua’s Families there on that ship, a huge ship, where they're going to be giving consultations right there. It is a Ship of Peace, a Ship of Life.
And we must continue developing all the programs that we are working on where Unity and Cohesion in all our Institutions is always fundamental. Why? So as to keep building more homes. Why? So that our rural population can continuing producing food and so that this production grows, as it has done. Why? So can continue building Hospitals, continue building Schools, continue bringing these Benefits to our Youth, to our People, for free. To continue in these programs as we have often pointed out, we have to eradicate Extreme Poverty in Nicaragua and to do so, Unity is fundamental, and for Unity Peace is fundamental. So, we can be sure that here in this Struggle for Peace, our Heroes and Martyrs will be present, Carlos will always be present. Today, on this Anniversary, Carlos, you are present, you are here with us and you continue to lead this Struggle, you continue to lead these Projects, these Programs, you continue to lead the Struggle for Life, the Struggle of the Nicaraguan People for Peace.
Stalin Vladimir Centeno: Nicaragua and its robust economy Projected growth for this year is between 3 and 4%, sustained by domestic consumption, private investment, public investment. Export performance is also experiencing one of its best periods. External sales are set to close this year at a record $8 billion, thanks to the boost provided by the general regime, which is advancing with increased agricultural, mining, and agro-industrial production, while free trade zones and services consolidate their expansion in various markets.
International reserves continue to grow, exceeding US$7.821 billion. Between 2025 and 2026, an investment of US$1.25 billion is being implemented for solar and wind projects that will add more than 300 megawatts to the national grid. The country has successfully reversed its dependence on oil, which eighteen years ago accounted for 75% of energy consumption, and now generates between 73% and 75% from renewable sources.
The country boasts a stable financial environment with 12% growth in deposits and credit. Inflation is holding steady at around 3%. Tourism is experiencing a strong recovery with new air connections and more cultural events that are boosting the influx of domestic and international visitors. Local governments are making steady progress on public works projects that benefit thousands of families with more streets, drinking water, sanitation, parks, lighting, and recreational spaces.
The trend indicates that the country is moving forward with an expanding productive base and a stronger domestic market, responding to an environment of stability. None of this progress would be possible without a government that has defined the people as President and that maintains wise leadership under the guidance of Rosario Murillo and Daniel Ortega, always committed to the well-being of Nicaraguan families.
Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition Response to US Trade Representative Report on Labor and Human Rights in Nicaragua Our submission addresses the following: Response to sources and issues cited in the USTR Section 301 Investigation Report on Nicaragua’s Acts, Policies, and Practices Related to Labor Rights, Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and Rule of Law. The Report fails to produce evidence of the Nicaraguan government's complacency in child or forced labor. The Report seems to conflate industry trade associations with unions when describing “union arrests.” Those arrested in the report’s description were not, in fact, union leaders, but instead two leaders of a business owners’ lobbying group who were arrested for acts of treason.
Between January 2007 and December 2023… 1,636 new unions were formed, making the total number of workers now affiliated in unions 1.2 million, or 38% of Nicaragua’s total labor force. Women’s rights Business Insider notes that Nicaragua is the leader for gender parity among economies in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is in sixth position in the World Economic Forum's “top 10” for gender parity in 2024. Safety and crime Nicaragua is one of the safest countries in Latin America. In 2023, the recorded homicide rate was 6.2, considerably lower than neighboring countries Honduras (31.1) and Costa Rica (17.2). Only El Salvador (2.4) has a lower rate in Central America.
Human rights Nicaragua has made huge advances in social and economic rights. Just one example, highlighted in a 2024 report from the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), is that Nicaragua is devoting a larger proportion of its budget to public health than most Latin American countries, and that one of the direct benefits is high life expectancy compared with the majority of the other, wealthier countries. Rule of law The World Bank Group’s Doing Business guide ranks Nicaragua at the average for Latin America in terms of ease of starting a new business, and as better than average in the region for enforcing contracts.
