Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition 5.27.2025: Rosario Murillo on Mother’s Day; Daniel Ortega on background to the 2018 coup, and on China; Statement at China-CELAC forum

Blessed Mothers, Mother Nicaragua, Nicaraguan Mothers, Our Greatest Present is Peace

Blessed Mothers, Mother Nicaragua, Nicaraguan Mothers, Our Greatest Present is Peace

Co-President Rosario Murillo: We are moving towards Mother's Day [May 30] celebrating the progress, achievements and everything that is possible from Peace  "in 2006 we had 20 State-owned and 29 private maternity homes, this year we have 182, a program that has been recognized by international health organizations…in 2006 there were 9,205 pregnant women housed in Maternal Homes; in 2024, 72,143 and maternal mortality reduced by 80% from 104 deaths in 2006 to 21 maternal deaths thank God in 2024…mortality in children under one month old fell by 66%, from 1,352 deaths in newborns in 2006 when the people regained control of the government, to 465 in 2024. We have certified 6,742 midwife sisters from the Maternal Homes.”

Daniel Ortega Speech May 24 concerning China, Russia, and the government conduct during the 2018 attempted coup He explains the alliance his government had with business leaders (COSEP) for about ten years, and how step by step the 2018 coup operation arose and proceeded. The counterrevolutionary violence, the role of priests, and the demands of the bishops that the legislature, judiciary, army and police be dismantled.  “The important thing is that...getting everything back together after that moment was not easy, but we have been getting it all back together; producers, businesspeople, workers, we managed to put together a new Alliance, reconcile with those who had seemed irreconcilable, we reconciled in those new circumstances, and from different political parties.

“Here the People's Republic of China is not coming so much looking for how to do business, rather it is coming to look for how to contribute to the Fight against the Poverty of Nicaragua’s people. Among the first Programs that China offered us was Cooperation with Housing, because Housing is a Priority, and we will at last be satisfied and content when we have all Nicaraguan Families in Decent Housing, not luxurious, but dignified, like the houses now being built.”

Nicaragua Statement to the Meeting of the China-CELAC forum, May 13, 2025 “At this meeting, we wish to recognize the global leadership of President Xi Jinping and China, in times when the unilateralism of the United States is attempting to impose itself by force, with economic aggressions that violate the norms, treaties and laws of global trade.

“We stand in solidarity with China in the tariff trade war launched by the US government. While it is true that it has been against the entire world, the most brutal blow has been against China, which they consider their main threat. We wish to reiterate that the threat against the world is the United States, who does not accept that other Peoples can achieve development with their own models and government system, with their own cultures and their own criteria….

We must recognize China as a friendly and respectful country that brings us development, cooperation and prosperity, a country that shares its great achievements and progress with all of us without imposing conditions. Unlike the United States and Europe, which historically see us as servants, China sees us as equals, as Brothers and Sisters who must cooperate together for the common good.”

Nicaragua ranks highest in gender equity in the Americas and #6 globally, so why US sanctions? If you asked 100 people in the US or the UK to name the country leading gender equity in the Americas, it’s unlikely anyone would correctly answer Nicaragua. This lack of awareness reflects the success of a decades-long imperialist campaign to discredit and undermine Nicaragua’s remarkable achievements since the 1979 Revolution. Nicaragua has implemented a comprehensive, nationwide programme that extends from the national level down to individual families and communities. At the heart of this effort is Nicaragua’s family-community model, which reflects the nation’s commitment to eradicating poverty and promoting social equity.
